Ozone, a form of oxygen capable of defending us from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun, also possesses interesting - although little known - disinfectant and sanitizing qualities. Thanks to these properties, ozone can be used successfully in many areas (we talked about it in our previous article) and for many things, first of all to purify the tap water at home, making it more good and safe to drink. It has been talked about recently, but ozone was recognized as an effective water disinfectant back in 1940, in the United States. Nowadays, many municipal water treatment plants exploit the qualities of ozone to sanitize drinking water. And this both globally (Moscow, Paris, Amsterdam, etc.) and in Italy (Turin, Bologna, Florence, Ferrara, etc ...) The use of ozone to improve the quality of tap water involves numerous advantages, such as:
Ozonated water is bacteria-free, therefore, in addition to having a better and more pleasant flavor, it is also safer.
Despite the proven qualities and safe and effective results of ozone, there is still a certain diffidence towards this molecule, which is blamed for being toxic. If this is only true at high concentrations, it is also true of all other chemical and natural disinfectants. Just think, for example, of the action of chlorine when it is excessively present in the pool water, as we discussed in our previous article. To exclude the risk of toxicity, the sanitization of the water is carried out following precise protocols that define the dosage and times of exposure to the ozone of the water, so as to guarantee total safety and protection of human health.
There are various solutions on the market for purifying tap water. Most of them involve the use of devices that require installation - generally under the sink -, periodic maintenance and filters that need to be replaced periodically. As a rule, suppliers of such devices require the signing of a supply contract which lasts on average two to five years, thus binding the service and affecting the family budget for a long time. The peculiarity of the purifier-sanitiser Ozobox è that to sanitize tap water, does not need any installation or masonry work, does not need any maintenance and above all does not have filters and cartridges to replace. Ozobox is in fact a portable purifier-sanitizer that uses only the ozone force to destroy all microorganisms.
As mentioned, the action of ozone in tap water is very effective for the removal of microorganisms such as bacteria, mold and fungi. In fact, any type of water contains natural organic matter, which can create annoying problems such as bad odors, unpleasant taste of the water and bacterial regrowth. The removal of this organic matter is therefore a priority task when you want to treat water and improve its quality. Ozone, as an effective disinfectant, manages to oxidize organic matter, eliminating it by 99.99% - in the case of bacteria - or rendering it inactive - in the case of viruses -. This translates into a useful and advantageous water purification process, as well as completely natural. In fact, to sanitize tap water in this way, it is not necessary to use chemical disinfectants or detergents. Micropollutants such as pesticides can often be present in surface or underground water. Ozone also proves to be very effective in the oxidation of pesticides, making drinking water safer and better. The ozone applied to tap water performs an even more effective disinfectant function than chlorine, chloramines and even chlorine dioxide. In fact, several studies have shown that ozone, unlike chlorine-based products, manages to degrade the microorganisms present without releasing by-products, identifying itself as the ideal molecule for the water sanitation process. Furthermore, ozonated water is better to drink and lighter because it also eliminates chlorine, the excessive quantity of which can only worsen the taste of the water and make it even less safe. Regarding the unpleasant smells and flavors of tap water, several causes can be identified. The compounds and microorganisms that form smell and taste, in fact, can be present in the water before being treated, but they can also be formed during the treatment of the water itself or in the pipes that bring water to our homes from the aqueduct. These compounds can derive from the decomposition of plant matter, even if, generally, they are the result of the activity of microorganisms present in the water. They are often very resistant, therefore eliminating them is not such a simple process. Ozone, however, can oxidize these microorganisms effectively, eliminating even the most resistant ones and contributing to the sanitation of the water.
Sanitized water with ozone is good to drink, but it is not intended only for food consumption. Ozone also has numerous uses in the kitchen, for washing fruit, vegetables, but also for preparing food.
The main strength of the use of ozone in the kitchen lies in the versatility and numerous benefits that this molecule brings. Ozonated water, in fact, can be applied to food products during the washing phase, to disinfect them and remove unwanted organisms, instead of the traditional chemical sanitizers available on the market. If dispersed in water, ozone kills bacteria like E. Coli more effectively than traditional disinfectants such as chlorine. Ozone also kills parasites and fungi and inactivates viruses, as well as freeing water - and food - from dangerous pathogens that have developed resistance to chlorine. Washing with ozonated water, in fact, involves an almost total reduction of the bacterial load. Since it is an unstable gas, ozone, which is formed from oxygen, returns to being simple oxygen in just 20 minutes, without leaving any trace in the freshly disinfected food.
In short, the use of ozone for the purification of water to drink or to be used in the kitchen is still an unpopular alternative, but it has a long list of advantages that you should be aware of. Thanks to its many properties and positive aspects, it will increasingly become an ally in the home, thus contributing to a significant improvement in people's quality of life. Furthermore, ozone, as previously mentioned, is an eco-sustainable choice capable of decreasing the quantity of plastics (it will no longer be necessary to buy bottles of water at the supermarket) non-recyclable waste (just filters and cartridges to be replaced) and polluting (enough for detergents to sanitize food) present on our planet.
